Amman Railway Station

The Jordanian Hejaz Railway Corporation is one of the institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Transport and is one of the first institutions that provided distinguished services in the transportation sector in the history of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is one of the oldest institutions in the history of the Kingdom and in the Levant and the Hejaz alike, as the Hejaz Railway was established from Damascus in the Syrian Arab Republic to Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the era of the Ottoman Caliphate in the time of Sultan Abdul Hamid II with a length of (1303) km during the period from (1900-1908), where the first trip to transport pilgrims and Umrah performers from the Levant to the Holy Land was operated on August 24, 1908 AD, and covering this distance now takes seventy-two hours instead of forty-five days by camels and horses. The Jordanian Hijaz Railway had the honor of transporting His Majesty the Founding King Abdullah I Ibn Al Hussein, may God bless his soul, on one of the trains on his first trip from Ma'an to Amman in 1921 AD, where His Majesty announced the establishment of the Emirate of Transjordan from the Giza station during this trip. The carriage that carried His Majesty is still a living witness within the holdings of the Foundation's historical museum. Successive governments have worked through the Foundation's administrations to preserve this historical legacy that is more than one hundred and seventeen years old, and have contributed to the continuity of the trains running along the line from the far north of the Kingdom to the far south, where the northern section is invested in operating tourist, student and family trips throughout the week and on official holidays and festivals.
